Carolla Development's Founder
Alan Cline, has over 30 years of experience in the computing industry, from
real-time data acquisitions to payroll and accounting to telecommunications and protocol translators
in client/server architectures. He has worked in such disparate technologies as IBM mainframes to
proprietary minicomputers to Windows NT and Unix. During his profession, he has increasingly been
more involved in methodologies and zero-defect software development, often leading the way in the
companies in which he has worked. Since using concurrent engineering method, over half of his projects
have been completed with zero defects. He is responsible for implementing several ground-breaking
ideas for the computer industry. Many projects were within R&D domains. He has been published several
times, speaks to professional groups regularly, and leads his own consulting company to help other
companies improve their software processes. He has superior verbal and written communication skills,
group dynamics and leadership skills. His physics background carries over into his thinking so that his
endeavors tend toward more technical rigor than our maturing software industry has on average.
As President of Carolla Development, recent client work includes: mentoring relationships for project
management and architecture, object-oriented development techniques and training, developing QA
departments for IT shops, and assisting with various size projects, from 2-person projects to projects with
over $1 billion budget.
Carolla Development has been instrumental in bringing in SEI-compliant methodology as new standards,
mentoring projects, supplying project management documentation, and training employees in political,
technical, or psychological aspects of project management, including upper management. Sometimes
only process assessments are performed for clients. Al Cline is lead consultant and manages every
project from "within the trenches", allowing him to gain new insights and techniques as he learns from client
knowledge too.
Recent clients (1999-2000) include: American Electric Power (training), AGT (assessments), BankOne
(standard methodology), Fourth Channel (assessments; process improvement), Mettler-Toledo
(project mentoring), Ohio Dept. of Transportation (standard methodology, project mentoring, documentation,
training, and QA), Ohio Dept. of Health (training, standard methodology), OSU Hospitals (training and
assessment), Qwest (training).
Alan also teaches graduate/undergraduate level courses at the Ohio State University Computer Science
dept. on these same topics as a part-time faculty member, and is an adjunct instructor at Ohio
Dominican College.
